hmm, not ever played an oboe before i wouldn't know, but i am assuming it wouldn't matter cause that has two reeds and those other instruments have one. start on a softer reed, probably 2 or 2 1/2. if you find them too soft and very easy to blow, move up a half step, don't start on V-12(Clarinet) or V-16(Sax), if you choose vandorens, or similar reed sytles, those are for advanced players and would require a firm and even embourchure. Hope this helps.

How does it translate?
I'd assume it doesn't. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the embrochures are vastly different to the point that you should assume nothing. I'd recommend starting on a Medium LaVoz, actually.

I've played both oboe and saxophone; the feel of the reeds and what you might require from each aren't even in the same ball park.

I've played the oboe for three years now and temporarily played the clarinet in that time. I was playing on a medium oboe reed and did fine on a 3 clarinet reed.

I myself don't play oboe, but I do play clarinet and saxophone. I find that if I use a size 2 1/2 reed on the sax then I need size 2 reed on the clarinet, but thats just me.

Try each strength/number reed and play on each one until you find which one works best. Using this technique allows you to start on the right reed. This is also something you should do every time you get a new mouthpeice. For example on a selmer c* i use a 3 and on a Runyon Quantum i use a 2. It all depends on the player and the mouthpeice.

Well from tons of years of experience all beginners on saxes should play on 2 1/2 and when you get more advanced go to 3's because if you're a beginner and you play for a long while on threes you embochure will fail... 2's are too soft for beginners it will mess up the embochure..
