 problem w/oboe......
Author: Corinne

alrighty, first off, my oboe is a selmer plastic student model. we haven't gotten around to getting a new one. now, marching season is pretty much over now except for 2 football games. so, concert season is going to start this wednesday. i've been playin 4 years but i seem to make stupid mistakes hurting my oboe every once in a while.
~the problem - today, my oboe (in its case of course) was in my bookbag. after school, i had soccer practice. when i went into the locker room, i dropped the bookbag. practice wasn't over for a couple more hours. so, when i got home and tried to practice, i could get out any notes with the upper section(B, A, Ab...). the notes i have problems with are ANY notes (besides middle C) that have to use the bottum joint (#4, 5, 6 keys etc.). can anyone help me with how to fix this??? concert season starts wednesday. i don't have another lesson until saturday, so i won't see my oboe instructor who could fix it. my mom says that we're not gonna bring my oboe into one of the 2 nearby shops b/c it'll cost too much (she's right about the cheap-skate costs) and we're kinda low on handy cash right about now....of course, it only happens when i need money. if there is ANY WAY at all that I can fix this adjusting a few screws or something maybe, I will gladly accept any comments. thanks! : )

I would first check and make sure all of your springs are in the right place, if not this could be part of your problem. Beyond that I don't know what you can do.

I would say you need to call your teacher and arrange a meeting before Saturday for him to take a look at it. If he's an understanding guy, he should agree since this is sort of an emergency. I mean after all, if you can't play those notes you can't practice either, right? And I'm sure he'd rather have you practicing... :)

It sounds to me like you knocked one of those keys out of adjustment, and it is now not sealing properly over the hole. If you can't play any of the notes of the lower joint, then I would be looking at the F# key and the vent hole right below it first. However you should really have your instructor look at it since although that key may be stopping you from playing the notes, it may not necessarily be the only key knocked out of adjustment.

The following oboe website is interesting, even though it may be too late. It sort of describes your problem.
