Ok, as I said, here's the James Gallway question.
What's up with the gold flute? I thought silver was the best for tone. Any speculation on the tone quality of gold? I also heard throught the rumer mill that he was buying a platinum one. Anyone else hear that?

i agree with the fact that we've all heard that silver has the best tone available for the flute, but one thing that i learned is that some sterling silver headjoints are lined with gold to give it a 'warmer' tone. i wasn't sure of this until i actually tried it myself and it definitely gave the tone a different colour which was a nice change.
and if i'm right, i think his flute Excalibur is his platinum flute...i may be wrong. all i know is that it's gorgeous and if ya have the money, why the hell not spend it on an extravagent flute? any hard core flute player would if they could:)

James plays what his sponsering company gifts him.
Of late, he has been playing a lovely heavy duty Muramatsu.
Of course, this artist's talents allow him to make most anything sound wonderful.

I think that when people say silver has the best tone quality that it's the best for students and such. Better than plated nickel, definitely.
The problem with gold is that it's very soft. So if you want a gold flute, usually it's an alloy, and the gold ahs to be mixed with something much stronger, which then makes the tone suck. So while most *good* flutes are silver, many do have gold lining.
Platinum flutes also give excellent tone quality, but they're out of reach for most flautists.
I had a judge for my solo last year, who kept her flute out. When she critiqued me, she played a pasage on her rose-gold flute. I can only decribe this flute as ultra-deluxe. And it sounded delicious.
I dont' think there's any one BEST material for flutes.
