I've been playing the clarinet for a little more than three years, since 6th grade. It's a plastic Selmer 1400. Lately, it's been squeaking when I play notes on the upper register. What could that mean?

this could mean a variety of things. in the upper registers you need control and air speed. you most likely have one missing. your reed maybe to thin to play on those high registers. you need to consider reed strength in brands to. a 3 vandoren is like a 3 1/2 or 4 rico. Vandoren or Mitchell Lurie are good brands. hope this helps.

It may have some leaks due to pads that are not seating correctly.

there are many factors that cause a clarinet to squeak,
1. incorrect embouchure
2. dry reed
3. the reed is too soft to play the notes in high register
4. the quality of the ligature.
5. some of the keys needed to be adjusted
6. the leaking of the instrument itself or the pads ...etc
ask your teacher is the best solution.
