would a 2 1/2 reed help me play the c (that's about 20 ledger lines off the staff) on a clarinet.

NO. You should get a stronger reed. if your hitting notes that high, you should already be on a 3 or 3 1/2. The stronger the reed the better for higher notes. And what brand? ricos are weak, vandorens are strong. (Rico-4=Vandoren-3. approx.)

Either brand is fine. Vandorens are more popular and are slightly stronger.

sorry to be intrusively abrupt, but once you get more than 7 lines off the staff, it's pretty much squeaking. Unless you are really good, then it's *really* hard to even control anything that high. A harder reed may help, but air support and embouchure are more key. You want the reed to be able to play in all registers, not just altissimo.

Super-high C is not an easy note to hit, even with the right reed. I'd recommend a Vandoren 3 or the equivalent hardness in other makes. A good firm embouchure is essential for these really high notes. You also need to practice somewhere where you can make as much loud noise as you like!

I use a 4 vandoren and can get the 5th octave E. once you play on them for a few days, they arent hard to play on. playing on smaller reeds seems hard now because i always over blow.
