Ok, heres a question for all you people in college or out of school. What does a person have a better chance at playing, flute or oboe? Like, are flutes or oboes more common? I play both and like oboe a little better, but I'm better at flute. I'm thinking I should pick one to get really serious with, but can't decide. So which one is more common?

Flutists are definitly more common than oboists. However, you should make the decision on which instrument you like more and are more comfortalbe playing. You should also take in to consideration the cost of the instrument.

hi, you shouldn't get our opinion in what instrument to get really good at. Its your choice. Just think: Which do I like playing, which do I feel more comfortable playing, What am I looking for in the instrument, and which one am I already really good at. Hope this helps! And when you do pick your instrument, just don't drop the other and never play it again!

***oh yeah, flutes are ALOT more common than oboes. Usually there can be 10 flutes and 1 oboe in a band.

ACTUALLY (just for the hell of putting something in caps) in most orchestras there are equal number of flutes and oboes. And, haha, most work these days is in orchestras, not bands. There are usually about 3 chairs for flute, and 3 for oboe, and maybe an english horn chair. So to answer your question, oboe isn't any more uncommon than flute, so you pick what you like to play.

i took up the oboe as it is a less popular instrument than the flute. over here (britain) we have usually two oboes and a cor chair in orchestra's against 3 flute chairs and a picc, in bands though we have loads of flutes and 3 oboes. oboe is better to, much more unique tone, sorry flautists!
