 Multiple Instruments

When I was in 5th grade, I played oboe in the school band... and then we moved away, and the school I went to didnt have a band program (it was a TREMENDOUS shock) until we moved again for 8th grade. So now, I'm on my third year of oboe, plus the one year back in 5th.
I picked up the bassoon around January - we're a small band program, only in existance for 5 years, and only a third of our band could to go to festival... so in lack of tubas (since they were both on academic probation), I offered to play the bassoon part.
And now, my friend Eddie (who plays flute, tenor sax, and clari), gave me a clari reed, and Ive started playing clari. What instruments do you all play?

Hey, learning to play multiple insturments is a very very good things. I'm a sax player in college but if i would have only limited my self to sax, i would not have gotten as far as i am now. It comes in handy when people are looking for great doublers and also when parts need to be filled, but there are no one to fills those parts. In a world today, u might not always find a job just playing saxophone. In the band that i am in, it is a pre~req. that you play Clarinet/Bass Clairnet, Flute and all of the other saxophones to be in this jazz band. So the list of instruments i all know how to play, not just able to fiddle around on, are: Saxophone Family, Clarinet Family, Flute Family, Tuba, Euphoium, Trumpet and piano. I've gotten gigs on all of those instruments. Even though my main instrument is saxophone, more than half my gigs where on doubles, so that guys quote might be true, but u'll definately be thrown out on the street with that attitude also. ~Jim Geddes~ UW-Eau Claire, Eau Claire Wisconsin

I, as most oboe players do, started out on saxophone. I have some experience on that, but I'm not so good at it anymore. My main, and most favourite instrument, is oboe. I am kind of puzzled here though: how do you guys develop the correct embouchure, and support for the oboe, flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, etc.? They are completely different from oboe, and to think of the sound that would be coming out makes me shudder. (Yusef Lateef, jazz oboist, HA) So yeah, stick to one or two instruments that are fairly similar (i.e alto+tenor sax, oboe/english horn, flute/piccolo). It will make progress on instruments far easier. (And less expensive to rent!)

Thank you D. And I think the answer to your question would probably be... they don't.

Yeah TorusTubarius your right most of us don't have a correct embouchure when we double on oboe. But if we use good air support on our main instrument (as i do) then its not hard to have good air support on oboe. At least for me. I can play it in tune very well as long as im not above a Eb first one above the staff.

Well, you may be the exception, but I wouldn't think air support on the flute and air support on the oboe very similar, and I know for a fact air support on bassoon, saxophone, or clarinet isn't even close to how you must support the air on the oboe, since I've played all of those at one time or another.

I was planning on either learning flute or clarinet over the summer to get a better understanding of another woodwind...anybody have any suggestion on which will be easiest to switch back and forth with regarding the fact that I'm a saxophone player?

Id say clarinet, personally. The embochure is practically the exact same thing... and if played well, it can give a beautiful sound.

i play mainly the oboe and at times the clarinet (planning for a full practise schedule this up coming term break...)
well i don't understand how you can manage so many instruments at one time? Do you people have separate teachers for separate instruments? Not that i'm trying to disgust ya all playing so many instruments, as a matter a fact i think its good as an experience and gaining that eability to play is just...well....nice....I believe not many people can be really good at more than 2-3 different instruments, and Torus, your quote is inspirational enough for me....haha...

my main instrument is flute (6 years). However, my second is oboe, and ive had no trouble with the air support. I also dont find it hard to go back and forth, unless ive been playing for a really time nonstop, then i find it a little hard to play oboe because my mouth gets tired. On the side i also play pic and bassoon, and will be learning tenor sax monday.

I've taught myself most of these instruments. Flute, Picc*i haven't played it in band, but i've messed with my friends' piccs*, Bb Clar, Eb Clar*i had our school one for the summer last year*, Bb Bass*I borrowed my friends for a day*, all for saxes*i own a soprano and alto which i play in Jazz, i played tenor in 7th and bari in 7th and in jazz*, Oboe*i learned it in a summer and played it for like 15 weeks*, Bassoon*I just recently picked it up this summer and hope to play it for a band class*, Trumpet*I play it in Pep*, French Horn*i play in my top band class*, Tuba*I march*, Trombone*I only had it for 2 days and i dind't get much done with it*, and i wanna learn Baritone/Euphonium*if i play trumpet and tuba, i can play Euphonium*.

My main instruments R Alto Sax/French Horn, and my secondary instruments R Clar/Trumpet. I odn't know where it came from to where i wanna play everything, but i like it. I played oboe for about 15 weeks, then i quit b/c i was playin french horn in my second band class, theni played it for a day b/c i decided to play it for one time before the year ends, and it hurt like heck. I don't switch too much. But i've practiced on most of these for a while. And i can play them pretty good.

*sorry for bumping this*
