I need help! I hadn't played clarinet for 30 yrs. after high school. We now have a community band and I am having a great time, but I am having trouble keeping the spit out of my mouthpiece! I KNOW I didn't do that when I was younger! I had a swab that I use, but I need some suggestions on how to stop it! I don't drink for a couple hours before we play, but that doesn't seem to help! I would appreciate any suggestions!

Well, I play oboe, but we do have a mouthpiece of sorts that tends to attract spit. Just whenever you have a rest, I usually suck air through the horn, and that way large amounts of spit don't accumlate in the mouthpiece and cause a problem. Hope this helps

yes i play a bunch of w.w instruments and that's a great trick for superfluous spit on reed/m.p

Dsgirard,
First of all, it isn't spit, it is condensed water vapour out of your breath. It is pure water. This is very important to remember when you read my advice in what to do.
Suck it into your mouth! It's only water. It won't do you any harm!

Well, Gnomon, the moisture in the horn that forms a track IS condensed moisture from your breath (as is some of the moisture in clarinet/saxophone mouthpieces) BUT pockets of saliva CAN creep into the reed/mouthpiece etc. which is actually spit. That's what I'm talking about with the sucking it out of the reed/mouthpiece.

I'm 12 and I've been playing the clari for almost 2 years.
My suggestion is not to have that much saliva in your mouth prior to playing.

I don't know about the clarinet, but it's really hard to play oboe for one with a really dry mouth.
