Hi,
I've recently bought a nice clarinet for my 12 years old who just joined the cadet's orchestra. This clarinet was bought very cheap in a garage sale. I don't know anything about clarinet and would like help on trying to identify the manufacturer and year of fabrication of this nice clarinet.
It is made out of wood, I think.. maybe ebony.. but not sure. It is stamped MADE in FRANCE, and i can see BARKLEE ARTISTE on it.
If anyone has info about this clarinet... I would really appreciate it.

I've been playing clarinet for almost 2 years.Usually most clarinets are made of ebony.

Most clarinets are not made of ebony. Ebony is a very
heavy wood, imagine holding a brick with your right
hand thumb! The wood is probally grenadilla.
I have two Barklees in my collection. Not very much
information on the company, except they are were a
part of the New York Woodwind Company, late 1930s to
early 40's. The company was bought out by Leblanc
Clarinets of France. Your clarinet is one made after
the buy out. They were very quickly dropped from the Leblanc
line of clarinets. My two play very well, dark, rich tone
that is hard to find in many models. I have only heard
high praise for the Barklees. Yet I must admit 99% of the
time I get a blank stare followed by "You have a what??"
In my humble opinion they are wonderfull clarinets that
posed a threat to the large clarinet manufactures of the
time. So the company had to go!
Have it restored and test if for yourself.

I restore the Clarinets and I have a very beautiful example of a Bb Soprano "Barklee" This is a very well made Clarinet. High quality, Grenadilla/Mpingo,You will notice how the small fitting were carefully counter-bored to obtain a nice flush fitted screw heads for the needle studs. A lot of other Clarinets made do not counter-bore/spot face as opposed to countersink.I have a Mahogany Boosey & Hawkes and side by side the Barkley is nearest to a mirror image than any others I have.As far as restoring, it is more maintenence friendly to me than my Buffet Crampon. Do you still have the Barklee?
