when i play the high notes on the flute they come out really bad and piercing, any tips on how to prevent this? THANKS!!
**I am learning flute on my own, and I was wondering if it is ok that when i blow into my flute that even though a rich tone comes out some of the air also goes out over the rim of the mouth piece and not into my flute...is that normal???***
THANKS!!!!

It is normal for your flute to let air out over the rim of the headjoint. For high notes just let your lower lip move forward to make a smaller hole. It will take a lot of practice

yes it is normal but when it starts to make a NOISE then you should start to think about your embouchure, although i'm not a flute player i have a partner (flute player) whom
which i've had a lot of experience playing with. he tells me that most good flautist will not have too much of the noises, plus he tells me that you have to think high to play high, maybe i can ask him for advice and tell you sometime later. The piercing sound is normal for a beginner
so good luck, keep up, and practise!

roll out a lil ... deep breath... and hmmm don't let your teeth touch because that blocks the air from flowing... force your air... if you can blow the sheet music from your stand you can get that high c ... it is mostly how you sit and your breath support... if you need more detailed info email me kk flutegirl4eva@yahoo.com or marchingbandchick@hotmail.com

that is an edge tone: the basis of how the flute produces a sound. What's an edge tone? air passing over an open hole, and getting caught in an "eddy" thus producing sound.
