 Help with flute playing
Author: Jessica
Date:   2003-03-05 01:50

Hi, I need help with flute playing. I can't do any note. I don't get where you put your fingers. (As you can tell, I'm a beginner.) I would also like to be able to play a song (like "Mary Had A Little Lamb"). If anyone is willing to kind of teach me or tell me what I have to do, please e-mail me or reply to this topic.

Hope to hear from ya!

Sincerely,

Jessica

To get good enough to play Mary had a little lamb well it will take about 2 weeks.

You should learn notes in this order
D,C,B Flat, E flat, F. Work on one or two to start with, then build up. use the finguring guide on this site to learn the fingurings.

The notes to marry had a littl lamb is:

D
C
B Flat
D
D
D (2 beats)
C
C
C (2 beats)
D
F
F
Rest one beat
D
C
B Flat
C
D
D
D (2 beats)
C
C
D
C
B Flat (2 beats)
all other notes get one beat

Is B flat the best key to start learning "Mary had a little Lamb" in? I would have thought that C or D would be easier, particularly since not all flutes can play down to B flat. Can some flute player please comment?

All flutes can play down to B flat, i am talking about the one in the staff. It don't matter one way or the other which key you learn "merry had a little lamb" in. If the notes are to low for the flute to play at anny level it will just be riten up an octave. The notes that I gave in my last post was the notes from "merry had a little lamb" in the key of C. I got it streight from my beggining flute book. Thats also why I said it will take about 2 weeks to get good enough to play that b/c of the stuff you must learn first. I also gave several notes to learn before trying to play "merry had a littl lamb" I got them and the order stright form my flute beginning book as well. Hope this helps.

D# means your right hand pinkey

Thanks.

I think that there is something wrong with my flute. Whenever I "play" a high note, it comes out and it sounds low. Whenenver I "play" a low note, it comes out high. Does anyone know what's wrong and can help me?

You are probably not using the correct air stream. Use a slower air stream for the low notes and a faster air stream for the higher notes. Also notice that for some notes on the flute have the same fingurings for different octaves. Which means the same finguring is used for the high note. So if it comes out high then you are playing the high note. if it comes out low you are playing the low note. Hope this helps. But trust me there is nothing wrong with your flute.

Jessica,

You really need to get with a good teacher and let them show you how to properly produce a sound on the flute. Angle your air up for a high note, low for a low note. However, there are some bad habits you can really get into unless you have someone knowlegeable to help you....
