Hi everyone,
I'm having a piece written for a recital and I was wondering if anyone knew any easy multiphonics for Bb and bass clarinet? Also, any tricks involving splitting notes and making comedy sounds?
Thanks very much, Anna x

I've never found anywhere on the web which lists Clarinet Multiphonics. There is a chart in the Cambridge Clarinet Companion.
Commedy effects can be got by:
1. flutter tonguing
2. humming while playing, particularly if you hum almost the same note
3. playing on just the mouthpiece and barrel with your hand over the end

I have found that you can split the air stream by fingering a note and opening a key to an chord tone (3rd or 5th work best-as they are parts of the overtone series.)
The mechanism of the clarinet will pose some resistance, especially on bass and alto, where some keys close multiple holes. The best way is to figure it out by experimentation as the results vary from one clarinet to the next. For myself a loose embrochure and a hard reed (Vandoren 5s on bass and #3 1/2 on Bb) yield the most satisfactory balance.
Check out www.henribok.com for some fingerings on the bass and examples from his book.
Best wishes and good luck.
