 Middle D to F
Author: Heidi

Hello. I'm back with another fingering question. You guys were so super last time - thank you. I'm working on Telemann's Sonata in A Minor, 4th movement, and it has a lot of very fast changes between middle D and F above the staff. Even using the lefthand F key, I'm finding this to be very awkward and I'm blurping. Any advice on nontraditional fingerings or exercises I can do to make these transitions smoother?

Thanks!

Heidi

Hi there. I'm sitting here looking at that piece right now. Ah yes there they are starting right after the little 32nd note run from A to A. Well I would say that left F is definitely the right key to use; I wouldn't try and use some sort of weird fingering to get through it. Now that I think about it, I think this was one of the pieces I used to play that I used to get comfortable with using the left F key.

This movement in itself is a great exercise for using the left F, but if you want more, you can try doing the C major scale in thirds up and down two octaves, using nothing but the left F key.

You could also devise some sort of exercise like you would see in the Salviani scale book. For instance, take a figure like you see in the second beat of the measure immediately after the 32nd note run in the Teleman. Do a pattern like that starting on low C, and work your way up on the C major scale. So it would be like:

C-D-E-C D-E-F-D E-F-G-E F-G-A-F G-A-B-G etc. all the way up to high C and back down. Trying this with different articulations wouldn't be a bad idea either. Also, practicing your D minor arpeggio gives you a good workout on the left F and forces you to develop smoothness with it even when not using it in a series of consecutive notes, like all the ones in the Telemann.

Anyway good luck.

Wow — that looks like a real workout. I'll give it a shot. That blurping's got to go.

Thanks!

Heh, well yeah that is a workout. I didn't mean you had to do it all at once. :)
