30 minutes per day most days. It doesn't hurt to miss an occasional day. Also it is helpful to take a short 5 minute break about half way through.

Time is the dependant variable, I think. A length of time is really quite a useless measure if you don't use it wisely. Some can accomplish in 35 minutes what others may need hours for.
Set yourself a goal: say: "ok, this is what I need to be able to do, and this is how I'll accomplish it." However long it takes you to accomplish that goal, that's how long you practiCe. The best thing you can do do is practice slowly, with a metronome. It has so many benefits. For long slow pieces, it helps you to be able to maintain support on notes. For fast pieces, practicing slowly WITH A METRONOME forces you to play each note where it should be. Until you can play it in time at about one-half, or one-quarter the speed, you shouldn't even think about practicing it fast. Hey, I betcha you'll even learn it faster too. Happy, how ever trudgingly laborious it may sound, practicing!

Also beginners cannot and should not put in the extended time that a more advanced student can and should.

I personally practice for longer periods of time, but not every day. I'm lucky enough to have a block schedule at my school, and Jazz Band and Band alternate days, so I spend 90 minutes each day in school playing. I haven't played sax in 2 weeks because I have bronchitis, and I can't wait until I get better so I can play. I usually practice outside of school about 3-4 times a week, at least 2 hours on Saturday and Sunday both, if not more, and less on school days.

personally i have no certain practise time. i just practise whenever i feel like it, which is not all that often, but that's because i have no 'challenging' music so i don't feel motivated to practise. But when i DO practise, I play for hours and hours. i can't stop playing when i start.
