The regular concert flute can go to a middle C. There are intermediate to professional concert flutes that can go down to the B below that. An Alto flute is pitched a fourth lower than written, in G. Its written low C sounds the G a fourth below it. A Bass flute is pitched an octave below the concert flute, and can play the C one octave below middle C. And of course the piercingly lovely tone of the piccolo, an Octave above the flute. Going lower than bass flutes is an obsolete practice, because of the tendency to not be able to hear them. There are Contra-Alto, and Contrabass, then Subcontra-alto, then subcontrabass. Visit www.contrabass.com to see more.
