I rarely can get any sound out of the high D (third octave) D6 (?) on my flute. No problem with high E. Is there some special technique to it? Also, how does the system of identifying notes by the addition of numbers (i.e. 3, 4, 5, 6,) actually work.Thanks in advance.

There is really no trick to getting the High D. The High E should be the problem note, the Hight E is even a problem for me! Things you might want to try is to make sure that you are using lots of air and keep up the breath support. Can you get the note on the initial attack and then it faids away? or can you not get it at all? The number thing you mentioned i am guessing is how the finguring chatrs use numbers to represent notes. The way this works is different for every finguring chat but each one will tell you how to read it. The one on this site uses T for the Thumb Bb for the Bb lever on the thumb. 123 for the 1st 2nd and 3rd fingures on the left hand, and G# for the Pinkey or the G# lever on the left hand. and then uses a "|" to separate the left hand from the right. Then after the | thing it uses 123 for the 1st 2nd and 3rd fingurs on the right hand and uses D# for the pinkey or D# key on the right hand. The C# and C and B is for the very low notes C# is the farthest down, C is the one in the Middle, and B is the one at the very top. Only some flutes have a B key. the C C# and B keys are all pressed with the right hand pinkey. To represent the Gizmo Key which all B foot instrument have this chart uses the bata sign. It is a thing that allows you to press only the b key like in C7. Hope this helps have anymore questions just email me.

I tried the more breath approach and it worked.I would either not get any sound (99%) of the time, or get a note occassionally. I couldn't figure out what made the difference. It must be the force of the breathing. Thanks. Re; the numbers, I was referring to the numbers that are printed out on the Basic Fingering Chart for Flute and Piccolo at this site. For example in the first octave a B is called a B3 note, a middle C is called C4. What should these numbers be telling me? Thanks again.

Oh thouse numbers are refering to the Octeave that the not is. Like B3 is the lowest note the flute can play if you have a B foot. C3 is the lowest if you have a C foot. The numbering system goes all the way to -7 to 7 (I think). But the flute is in the top part of the octaves that any instrument can play. the highest note in this chat is G7 which is in the 4th octave of the flute. middle octave is like B4 to G5. The flute can play to the top of the octaves and the piccolo is like in octave 8 or 9 if you can play that high. if you are a bigging flutest like 1st or 2nd year do not attempt to play above G6 unless your band director or private teachers tells you to. It can mess up you embecoure if you try to go to hight to soon. Hope this helps.

The numbering scheme for octaves is based on the piano which has slightly more than seven octaves range. The lowest C on the piano is called C1, the next up is C2 and so on up to the highest note which is C8. There are also three notes on a piano below C1 which have the index 0. These are A0, Bb0 and B0.
Middle C is C4. The system is designed so that a G5 played on a violin is the same note as a G5 played on a flute or an oboe. The system is made more complicated by the fact that some instruments such as clarinets, horns and saxophones are transposing instruments, but as a flautist, you don't have to worry about that.

well... There are differnt fingerings for each D or Db... Third octave D is fingered 2 and 3 on your left hand. Yyour have to make a smaller hole in your ambusure to get a higher sound out. If you need anymore help, just let me know! By the way, what grade are you in? I'm in 9th grade, and I've been in 1st chair since I started band in 6th grade. I've been in marching band for 2 years now,also!
