Just out of pure curiousity, when did you start the instrument that you play (please state what it is!!). Also when do you think is the most suitable age to start that intrument.

Well I started playing violin When i was about 10 and since i new music i picked up sax quickly and was at my best out of all that started that year and i started when i was 13 and im second chair in the top band of my school. So i think that the ages 10+ are fine enough for me.

I began playing the Tenor Sax (my first instrument) in the seventh grade. I started a year late according to most programs, but by my Senior year in high school, I won the highest musical award my school offered.

I think that once a person is in fourth or fifth grade, that is a good time for them to start learning AN instrument. The particular one will depend on them, but by that time they will have good motor skills, and an idea of what sort of instrument they might like.

i think anytime is a good time to start an instrument. i started piano when i was 4 and took lessons till i turned 10, then i got a saxophone. at college the piano lessons payed off because i don't have to take any of the 4 required semesters of piano here.

I also started playing an instrument (piano) when I was four, then after wading through saxophone, clarinet, bassoon, and the tuba, discovered that I was really an oboist at heart, and have stuck with the oboe almost exclusively since I was 15, though I'm still a fairly good sax player as well (but if you ask me I'll deny any knowledge of how to play the saxophone.)

One of my best friends started playing the violin when he was three, and another friend who started piano when he was also three. And I don't want to toot my own horn or anything but just as an example, all three of us now have perfect pitch, and pick up on anything musical very quickly.

So from my own experience, I believe wholeheartedly that you are never too young to start learning music. Not necessarily any particular instrument, but music in general. It is well known that in the course of a child's development, there are certain critical periods that he passes through in which he is most apt to learn certain skills, like language and music. Start 'em early; that's what I say.

For oboe in particular, three years old may be a bit young to start. I would say after introducing them to music through say piano or something, a good age to start the oboe would be around 8 or 9. But that's just a guess.

I started playing alto sax in 5th grade school band, and switched to tenor in 9th grade. I think that kids interested in playing should start as soon as they feel ready :)

My daught is taking clarinet lessons in the 7th grade. She is presently using a loner clarinet. I would like to buy her a good clarinet, but I am not sure what would be a decent one for a beginner. Could someone please help me?
