I recently borrowed an oboe from a friend who is an elementary band instructor. He said it tis a "beginner oboe". It has two holes on the bell, and a key up high that looks odd. The fingering chart in the book which I got looks like the oboe I used to play in school, not this one.
Does a "beginnner oboe" or student oboe have hole in the bell, or could there be low keys missing?
Thank you!

Hi there. The holes in the bell are supposed to be there. For oboes without a low Bb key (which is what you have), these are vent holes that are supposed to keep the low B from being quite as flat as it would like to be. And if you really want to, you can close those holes with your knees and get out a low Bb... but it's generally really flat, and that makes for some pretty horrific posture.
About the weird key up high... I don't know about that. What does it look like?

Is the weird key on the top of the octave key (the key on the back)? If it is, it's the "third octave key". Basically, it's just another way of playing the really really high notes. You probably don't need it. My teacher and best friend who both went to school for oboe have never used it. Hope that helps!

I am an oboe beginner, I got the same problem too, I went to the store, and rent an oboe for $43CND,I didn't know anything about oboe(but I am a good saxophone player). so I just rent it, than when I go to see my teacher, it is so different as his oboe. and it has like 2 holes. My advance is, if your oboe is not too hard to play, it will be alrigth, but if you want to be a perfessional, you really should buy a oboe for like 4,000 bucks(CND) it is not really cheap, but don't worry about it, you'd better ask your teacher about it.
good luck on your oboe,it is easy, I just learned 5 days, and I can play the music now!!easily!!(because I am a good saxophone player)
See you!
