What do you guys think of the Buffet-Crampon Green line oboe? I love the fact that it doesn't have a grain and therefore won't crack due to temperature changes. What about you>?

Well, the kind of oboe you get depends on your price range, your level of experience, what you plan on doing with the inustrument in the future... lots of factors.

Personally, I've never played on a Buffet oboe that I really liked, though admittedly I've never played on a Green Line oboe. How much does one of those things cost? From what I understand however, the Buffet oboe is adequate mechanically, but lacks the depth of tone color one can achieve with other makes, especially Loree. I don't think I could play on anything but a Loree now. Laura, who posts on here also plays on a Covey oboe, and I'm sure she could tell you all about it. I've played it, and it's a good horn.

I've also played on a Yamaha, which was so-so; good responsiveness and resistance, fair tone, but crappy intonation. I've played on a Selmer, which sucked out loud, and a Marigaux which I thought was also so-so.

Again, a lot of it depends on your price range, but for my money it's Loree or nothing, even if it is somewhat "old school". Although having an oboe less susceptible to cracks might be nice... It just depends on your own priorities.

Yeah, I played a 'wonderful' green line oboe for a little more than a year and the girl ahead of me in school played it the two years before that. The keys bent easily on it, when they shouldn't have. And one day, I was putting the top two joints together and the tenon on the top joint broke clean off. It was less than three years old. The warranty held, of course, and they were very nice about fixing it, but I strongly recommend spending money on one of the brands Torus mentioned. Especially a Loree if you can get one. I love my Covey (www.oboes.com).

I'm sure that Buffet makes wonderful clarinets, at least, everyone who's talked to me about them says they're good, but I'm not a clarinet player, so I don't have any authority on that subject, but I feel that Buffet oboes aren't really worth it. I know that it could have just been that oboe or whatever, but there are other, better brands.
