 clarinet to soprano sax
Author: Chris

I am in the ninth grade and I am attempting to go from clarinet to the soprano sax. I found that alot of the fingerings are similar, but I am having a hard time getting the lower notes out.(anything below the 2nd line G)Any advice on how to get these notes to speak, or anything else I should know would be greatly appriciated.

They are 2 very different instruments. Sax emboucher is alot less firm than clarinet. But before this continues much further, why soprano? Please don't say Kenny G, or some other guy you heard on the "lite jazz" radio station. I have a lot of my school students that want a sop. because they think it's cool. Learn on a tenor or alto. You'll have more parts to play in jazz band and probably have more fun with it. Sop is the hardest sax to play,I think.Consider the piccolo, do flute players start on picc? no way, that would be a foolish way to go about learning that instrument. The other thing to consider is the amount of "real playing time" you might get with soprano. It is very little. All that said, if you try to start with soprano, plan on spending alot of time with a tuner.

the two insterments are diffrent i myself play the clarinet alto clarinet alto tenor saprano and bari sax the fingerings from middel register d up are the same . to get out the lower notes you need to loosen your ametcher open your throat so that you can fit a watermelon in it ,the tendancy is to tighten up and creat the sound of someone squeezing a cat .qustion are you planing to permenently change because u shouldent switch back and forth u can do one for marching and one for synfonic

I can play pretty much any instrument, and I learned that for alto sax tighten your mouth, blow EVENLY, don't play too hard on it, and just don't get nervous or jittery. Anymore questions just post them. Goodluck
