 Clarinet vs Saxaphone
Author: jeff

My 10 year old son wants to play the saxaphone and yet the school has said kids should start out with the clarinet. Does this make sense? If so, any recommendations on clarinet for purchase? or is renting better? Thanks.

Playing an instrument should be something you enjoy doing. If you don't like the instrument your on you probably won't practice or just Quit the instrument.
if you still want to go to clarinet, it would be better to rent first just in case he doesn't like the clarinet. I don't know if this means anything to you but i recently wanted to take up a sax after 4 years of clarinet. All of my teachers told me to take tenor, but that instrument isn't the one >I< wanted to play, i wanted to play the soprano but all my teachers told me it was really hard to play, so now i've been playing soprano for 2 months now and my teachers accept that i play soprano not tenor. It's all about what you'll enjoy, not what somebody else wants. Hope that helps.

It certainly makes sense. The clarinet is smaller and easier for a child to master, although it is technically a more difficult instrument. The sax is just too big for a small child. The techniques your son will learn on the clarinet will transfer easily to the clarinet. If he does it the other way around, he will find the clarinet very difficult.

A good clarinet for a beginner is a plastic student model. Any clarinet from one of the "Big 4" manufacturers should be ok: Leblanc (Vito), Buffet, Yamaha or Selmer.

this is true mainly because they have much of the same fingering and are easier to play and gets you somewhat warmed up to a saxophone. i know myself because i started out playing clarinet and it made playing the saxophone alot easier. i also know this becuase i had tried to play the saxophone before the clarinet and it was very stressful and hard. of course a handmade or even machine made clarinet is better than a rental especially a hand made. rentals tend to be in not as good a shape as they could be and are also quite worn out. they still work most of the time but i would reccomend a hand made one(depending on how long your son intends to keep it up)If he is only playing the clarinet first until he can play the saxophone, you might as well get a rental and save piles of money.

I played the clarinet when I was in 6th grade it has taught me a lot about fingering and so but now in 8th grade I had asked my teacher if I could play sax. He said he would see how i did and I learned to play the sax in 1 week I now play sax part time for the band.

When i began band in 5th grade they required you to take at least one year of clarinet before sax. This is generally a good thing except i got jipped out of taking my sax test and it wasn't until just last year i FINALLY got a saxophone. Point in case: I think it's a generally good idea to do clarinet first (i still play my clarinet in band and play sax in my free time) but if he wants to change to sax, make sure he gets it done. Don't let some teacher jip him out of doing it.

I started out on the saxOphone and I loved it! It is an AWESOME instrument. My teacher told me I probably couldnt afford it but I play it anyways. lol. Dont make your child play clarinet. If you do he might decide I hate this and if I cant play what I want to I will just drop it. You know. Well I hope this helps you

Beleive me, saxs are way better man. Im in the 6th grade and i play the sax, ive never had as much fun in the last semestar then i ever had in my music experience. Beleive me, whoever is the band directer your sons school is nuts if they really wanat your son to be deprived of the best instrument ever!!!! Plus, since i am about his age i would need to say, most of the kids at my school are teased for playing the clarinet. So if your son dosent want to be deprived of all social life, then make sure he goes the right way with a good sax.
