I was going to buy a clarinet from my local instrument dealer, who does repairs as well. Now I find the same model on sale by a mail-order company 25% cheaper.
Should I buy a clarinet by mail order, without having tried it out?
I will save IR£250 ($333) which is quite a considerable sum for me, but I fear that there might be minor problems which a local dealer could sort out but a mail order company could not.
Has anybody any ideas?

The conclusion of this debate was that I decided to go with the local instrument dealer. He will set up the instrument when it comes from the factory. Apparently parts often come loose in transit and need to be tightened. He will also service the instrument after 6 months and a year. These services make up for the difference in price.

I would definitely lean towards purchasing from a local dealer if at all possible. Later down the road when you need repairs, the local shop will probably give a greater priority to its customers. Also, most reputable shops will fully test each new instrument before selling it to a customer. An online company may try to serve the masses with a bare minimum test drive. I use to work for a local music store, and the repair personnel would make minute adjustments until each instrument meet stringent standards. If the money factor is crucial, you have to go for the lower price. I will always try to give my business to the local shop for my instrumental needs.
