 Metronome

Hi, just got a metronome and I'm wondering what setting (how many beats per minute) should I put it to for 4/4 time and 6/8 time and 3/8 time?
Is 4/4 time 120 beats per minute?

These have nothing to do with the speed.

4/4 means 4 beats to a measure with a quarter note getting one beat.

6/8 means 6 beats to a measure with an eighth note getting one beat (this is sometimes played as two beats to a measure with three eighths per beat though)

3/8 means 3 beats to a measure with an eighth note getting one beat.

Look at them tempo markings on your music. They will either be words like Allegro (lively), etc or they will show an actual speed like 120 beats per minute or 80 beats per minute.

For example, depending on the tempo marking, 4/4 might be 40 beats per minute or it might be 240 beats per minute. But in each case it is four beats per measure with the quarter note getting one beat.

4/4 time is a not at metronomic meeter. all the 4/4 is, is the time signature meaning there are 4 beats per measure and the quarter note gets the beat. The acctual beats ber minute can be anything form 1-infinaty. 6/8 time means 6 beats per measure and the eight note gets the beat. 3/8 time means 3 beats per measure and the eithnote gets the beat. Understand? Also the top number in any time signater tells you how many beast are in a measure. The bottom number just tells you which note recives one beat.

the music that you are playing should tell you the time.
