The normal range of the flute is considered to be three octaves. The first octave is got by blowing softly; the second by blowing harder and the third by blowing harder and using unusual fingerings.

There is also a 4th octave for the Flute which use exteremely unusual fingerings and taks alot of air and practice to play that high.

there is a common misconception here. To go up in octaves on the flute is not to change how hard you blow, it is just to change the pressure, i.e. making the hole you blow from you mouth smaller. Also, when you go up, you change the angle from which you blow into the flute. on low notes you should tend to blow more into the flute, and on higher notes blow your air more across the embouchure hole. this will allow the octave changes, rather then blowing the heck out of it.

I began to play the flute again after five years. How can I tell the octive notes and what they look like. The b,a,c,d,and other notes confuse me when they are taken octives higher. I want to see what the notes look like next to the lower octives to study well.
