I've been toying with learning to play the oboe for years (I used to play the bassoon at school many years ago), purely for my own pleasure. I was wondering if anyone could answer my questions:
1. Which type and make of oboe is the best
2. A good secondhand supplier (I live in the NW of England)
3. Is there a good book recommended for beginners
4. Do any music shops hire out instruments? (Again in the NW of England)
I'd be grateful if anyone could give me any information
Many Thanks
Ann

I prefer the Fox brand of oboe because the extremely high quality of plastic is comparable to a wooden oboe. The plastic instrument will not crack in extreme weather change. Quality handmade reeds can be purchased through the mail by searching the Internet. I would suggest soft or medium soft reed. Most US music stores will rent out instruments but the student quality is still very poor. Good Luck!
