I would really like to expand on this "gender" thing. I'm a guy, and my fav. instruments and the sax, the oboe, the flute, and the piccolo. I have been made fun of because I play the flute or picc. I think this stems from the flute having a high pitch. The common "gay" person would seem to have a higher voice(in turn, not manly). However, this common sterotype rarely applies. I'm in a community band/choir, and it's probably the wierdest you'd ever see. Out of the 12 flutes, 11 are guys, and ALL of them sing baritone or lower. We have a piccolo, who is a guy and sings BASS. Out of the 4 tubas, 3 are girls, and one of the girls is a coloratura soprano. The reason they play instruments out of their range, they say, is to get a better ear for a wider range of pitches. So to all you guys who get made fun of for playing flute, or girls who get fun of for playing tuba, you're not the only ones out there, and there isn't any reason for you to get made fun of. Just ignore it!

Yes I have had that problem. I play the clarinet. There are 3 other boys out of 42 clarinetists in my band. I am the second highest chair for a guy. There are a lot of steriotypes for this type of thing. Just do what I do. Tell them, you arn't man enough to play the clarinet, or in your case, flute.
Have fun, and don't ever give up.

I play clarinet myself (and sax, and flute...), although now I'm almost out of college. If you ever need encouragement, though, just take a look at the orchestras accross the nation - most professional flute, clarinet, and oboe players are men. Has to say something about perseverance.

I never really seem to have this problem. I think it's just because if someone were to suggest something like that around me, it would automatically register upstairs as being so ridiculous and childlike that my brain wouldn't even bother to log it into my memory.

I know exactly how you feel. It seems that the people with almost no talent make fun of me because I play the flute. I am the only male flute player in my school, but I know that when I look at orchestras that most of the flute players are males.

well in my marching band there are around 10 (out of 56) guy clarinetist one of whom sit 2 chairs down from me in the top ensemble in our school (one of the best in the state), the tubas are almost all girls, trombones and horns are a equal mix of girls and guys. we have one male flute. we had another that graduated 2001 who wore devil horns in his hair. i dont think anything goes into what instrument is played besies what the peson likes. no one here makes fun of anyone for their choice in instrument.

I have a medium-high voice, and I am fascinated with low instruments. Doesn't explain my flute and picc, but I've always wanted to learn something in the low brass family... baritone or trombone or maybe even tuba. It's just something new. Who wants to always sing and play in the same range?
