Hi,
I have a 12 inch mid 19th century rosewood and ebony 6 key piccolo and I am trying to determine the pitch. It seems to be somewhere between C and Db. If anyone can give us some advice as how to determine the proper pitch, it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Or is it a "high pitch instrument" - you'll have to check it against a meter, I think.

I think it is unlikely that your instrument was intended
to be D flat. This is a very unusual key to make any instrument. Most instruments are in C or nearby keys,
that is, close in terms of numbers of sharps or flats.
I've seen instruments as far from C as Eb (three flats) or
A (three sharps), but I have never seen a Db instrument (five flats).
There are two reasons your piccolo may be sharp. It may
have been designed to play in C but at a different standard
pitch. The current standard A=440 Hz has not been around
that long.
It also may be designed to play sharp so that the pitch can be lowered by moving the top joint away from the rest of the instrument. Is it constructed from two pieces so that this is possible?

Well, I heard allready of flutes pitched in D flat, but I do not know whether theese were 'Boehm' type or flutes with few or even without keys.
The keyless flutes used in (german:) 'Spielmannszug' bands usually are pitched in C flat (I do not know why they don't say B natural) or (the alto type) in F flat (again it's not said in E natural).
