I've played clarinet for a while, and I've been itching to try saxophone (mostly because I'm getting sick of playing the piano in jazz band). I've heard a lot of different things about sax fingerings - that they're pretty close (octave key instead of register key), that they're impossible ("You're better off trying to play trumpet!" - as if!), and everything in between.
Anyone want to offer their expert knowledge and clear it up once and for all?

I am sure most clarinettists who also play sax will tell you it is not dificult to transfer.
I, too, play clarinet in a windband and recently started to play sax in a jazz group.
The fingering for the upper register clarinet is very similar to both registers of the sax.
Why not try one in a music shop or try one of your friends in the jazz group

The basic 2 octaves of the saxophone are very, very easy if you already play clarinet. My niece is a good clarinetist. I explained to her how to play those two octaves, and she got it first time - that's less than a minute it took her to learn.
But the low notes are a bit tricky because you have to loosen your embouchure as you go down, while all your clarinet playing will have been encouraging you to keep the embouchure rock steady.
And the saxophone doesn't really do high notes the way the clarinet does. There is an altissimo register in the sax, but it is crazy - like the really high notes in the clarinet four ledger lines above the top of the stave.
