Hey, i am going to start playing bari sax next week. the sax is a school-owned, selmer model 1256 that is about 3 years old. i am very excited about playing the bari (i currently play alto, and i have for 4 and a half years). i am going to be playing it for contest next month. i was just wondering if any of you had any tips or tricks for playing the bari. i have heard that playing very low and very high notes is hard, and i wondered if any of you could help me with this. thanx!!!

Low notes aren't as hard as you think on a Bari Sax. The amount of air you use depends on which note you are playing. The hardest low note is the low D. To get it perfect blow lightly at first then just go at it then it will come out right. Other low notes are simple.

i just recently picked up bari myself but had never played an Eb before its a great instrument especially in jazz. my tip is just keep a loose jaw for the low notes and the high notes are a piece of cake if youve played alto already you'll be fine

Yeah, i've been playing the alto for about 5 years and it was an interesting switch to baritone. It really isn't as hard as you think as said in the other replies. just really make sure to always have a very loose embouchere on the lower notes. and believe me, try to clean out the bari as often as possible! :D :P another tip: USE THE SPIT VALVE!!! :D :D IT HELPS!

try practicing the low notes ALOT to get used to how much air you need, and also use a flatter tongue on the really low notes (anything lower than an E. BTW I've been playing bari for about a year I've played Alto, Soprano, and I'm best at Tenor.

U always wanna take nice deep breaths. And if u practice playing ur lower notes really soft, just enough to here them, then u will get better because its easy to blasr the low notes but can u play them soft.
