 Clarinet/Sax??

Hi guys, I'm so glad I found this site- perhaps you can help me with something that i've been pondering. I've decided that at the ripe old age of 18 (i know, so young and yet feeling so old) that I want to learn how to play an instrument. I grew up with piano lessons (those fizzled out after 5th grade), but I have been taking voice and working on my singing since I was 11 (and have stuck to it! smile.) oh, and i played recorder in 5th grade (but then again, didn't we all?) anyhoo- I'm thinking about persuing either clarinet or saxophone (i'm interested in jazz), but i have no idea where to start. I'm in college at the moment and i don't have much time, but i was thinking i could begin over the summer. I've heard a lot about buying used instruments, and i was wondering if anyone had suggestions about that. Also, and this might seem odd, I have rather small hands (not exceptionall so, but i play a bit of guitar and it's quite difficult for me to make bar chords) and so i was wondering if either instrument would be easier to handle. Wow, i wrote a lot! Ok, so if anyone has any info or tips or anything, I'd love to hear from you. Thank you so much for reading this, and have a lovely day. ciao!

well i really cant reccomend what instrument you have to see hear and touch the instrument before you can play it. but if you like jazz, play sax but if you like a bit o' classical play the clarinet. jazz may have a bit for the clarinet but sax has more. its all up to what you like.

but if you want some better suggestions, wait for eoin to answer.

Back in the 30s, the clarinet was big in jazz, but it has died out now. The sax is a much more popular instrument. Either instrument is easy enough to hold, even if you have small hands. They are designed to be playable. The clarinet is probably more difficult. But if you do learn it, you will have no problem switching to sax. If you start with sax, you will probably never switch to clarinet later as it will seem too much trouble.

If you decide to go for a clarinet, you want a Bb Soprano Boehm System clarinet. This is the standard instrument, but there are one or two cheap instruments floating around (such as the ones from India) which are not Boehm system. Do not touch these. A plastic clarinet is good to start on until you decide you like it.

If you decide to go for a saxophone, start with an alto. This is slightly more expensive than the soprano, but it should be easier to learn on and is closer to what you think of a sax sound.

Whichever you try, it would be a good idea to get some lessons.

Go for the sax, ive been playing for about 12 years now and almost out of college, i like the sopranno and the tenor the best but all the saxophone are great. Plus they look alot cooler than a clarinet. its your choice but depends on whether you're into sax/classical

Sax or Clarinet? Which sound do you find most pleasing. Music is not just music. music is emotion. Enjoy!
