The tone should be very clear and vibrant, with no honking or harshness. It should have a singing quality, and should sound rich and smooth.
Bottom line however is what sounds good to you. Ultimately, every player will develop a sound which is his own. If you have a program like Morpheus or WinMX, you could also try searching for "Saxophone" on it, and you might get saxophone quartets or other alto saxophone pieces that will give you a very good idea what to listen for. Anyway, help this helps.

It is very common for a beginner to have this problem with sound. Just hang in there and practice. For the moment, stay away from the bottom notes as they are even more difficult to get to sound nice and they tend to jump up an octave unexpectedly for beginners.

when you get good, your sound will be like butter melting. you might try joining band class or getting private lessons. good luck dude, and have fun.
