I have a student horn, and have never had any problems matching perfect pitch with the band that play with. However, I've just purchased a brand new yamaha alto sax intermediate, and no matter where I move the mouthpiece on the neck, I just cannot get the right sound thats needed. C# sounds to sharp as wellas D even if the mouthpiece is at the end of the cork. This is while the instrument has already been warmed up. What am I doing wrong?

was buying a Yamaha. However there's not much you can do about it now, so what kind of mouthpiece are you using? It could be that it is too short.

Just because a saxophone is a yamaha doesn't mean it's completely out of tune and unusable!! !! The guy has only been playing for a few years, and heaven forbid he wanted to purchase one that wasn't hordly expensive. Yamaha doesn't make professional quality saxophones, but they do make rather tough student models. I just recently picked up my sax from the shop, i had sent it in because it was too sharp. The only reason for that because of an air leak. My advice is,take it to where you bought it from, and they should be able to fix it.
good luck
