Hi,
I'm a bassoonist of more years than I can count. I have a chance to purchase a Fox contra at a great price. I played contra for one semester in college but that was 30+ years ago. What should I look for other than the obvious (intonation, tone, etc).

First of all: Wenn you have the opportunity to buy a contrabassoon and you can afford it, do it! Not so many persons own their own contrabassoon as it is very expensive, but it's such a nice instrument! And a Fox contra is certainly not a bad instrument. What model is it? How old? Was it a professional player?
Of course, intonation and tone are very important items. The most important thing is, that you feel good wenn playing it. Ask if you can try it out for a few days maybe?
Also look for any scratches (although not the most important), any problems with keys,... Look if it needs to be revised.
