Exactly how loud should the clarinet section of a band be? I have two conductors. One tells us not to be so loud. The other screams 'MORE CLARINET SOUND!!'.
So I'm thinking '?????'
And another question. The other time i was playing clarinet, I sounded sharp and flat at the same time. Is that possible? I swear it was sharp AND flat. How can i solve this?
Some other times, theres this hollowish sound when I play. Kind of like.. You can hear some extra air coming from the clarinet. Is that my fault or the clarinet's fault?
Last one, I promise.
I use a size 4 and sometimes 4 half reed. Thats like the largest reeds my band supplies. When my friends accompany me to buy reeds and they see I'm using that big a reed, they all go 'Megan are you mad???' or 'Using big reeds dosen't mean you're better than the rest', which makes me feel like I'm too desperate to 'excel' or 'soar' above all others, but come on.. I'm not that eager. It is a problem with fellow clarinetists to not use big reeds? All I want to do is to train up my breath support!!
Ok, so after I've been using size 4s, I find it hard to adjust back to 3s and 3halfs because I sound super sharp no matter what I do to adjust myself and the clarinet.
Anyone got a suggestion on this? Whether I should remain in size 4half or use smaller reeds? And how can I not sound so sharp when I use 3s?

Depending on how loud the rest of the band is, the clarinets should adjust, because they are usually alot of them. Also, it depends on what kind of music your plaing.
Higher notes are sharp, and ower notes are flat. You have to tune yourself and work to get the right sound.
You sound hollow or airy, you may not be taking in enough mouthpeice. To check this, put your mouth on your mouthpeice as if you were about to play. Now raise your upper lip and put your nail on where your teeth are. Now take you mouth off and look at it. Then if it's not as much as you think, get more mouthpeice. you may squeek at first, but it eventualy better. But you may have a faulty pad.
The thicker the reed, the fuller the sound. When i play a lower reed, then i sound sharp too. Don't know why, but i do, but there's no problem with a biger reed.

the airy sound/mouthpiece thing-
my director makes us push the mouthpiece into our mouth while playing until we sqeak the you pull it out just a little and thats how much it should be in your mouth

The volume shouldn't be loud, or soft. The volume should be medium. blow a sound with a soft blow.
