 helping a beginner

Hi. I have just agreed to help a beginning flute player & give here some lessons. I don't really know where to begin. Anyone have any suggestions? Her biggest issue right now is remembering where her fingers go. Is there any easy way to help her with that? It's been a long time since I've was a beginner, so I'm not even sure where to start with her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There is a good chart on this site which may help. Click on the words "Fingering Charts" at the top of this page, then click "Flute and Piccolo", finally click on the words "Description of Keys and Fingering Notation" which appear in yellow on the blue background. Allow some time for the picture to fully appear.

I would suggest concentrating first on holding the instrument correctly with proper posture, etc. Use a beginner's method book. This will give you an instant "Lesson Plan" to follow.

If you haven't already, play her instrument to be sure there is nothing wrong with it.

Above all, be patient!

Hope this helps.

I have been teaching flute for quite sometime now and for new players, I always introduce the parts of the flute to them first and how to assemble it.

I think you should start by teaching them the correct method to blow on a headjoint first and only using the headjoint to start out.

After you think that she is stable enough, then you put the headjoint on the whole flute, then you tell her which finger goes where. The first note you should start with is b1 and she should at least get a steady tone before proceeding onto other notes.

Hope this helps, you can email me if you have any other problems at archangel981112@yahoo.com

If you still want a learning plan, you could try this website:
www.mostlywind.co.uk

Enter this site, on the right hand side, click on TEACHING.

You will find a basic plan on how to teach flute.

When I first learned in fifth grade, we put stickers on the keys.
