 Double Reed Questions
Author: ZacMan

Hi, I play almost every woodwind in my band. All except for the oboe and bassoon. I love the sound of the bassoon, but i have never played one, so I have a few questions about it.

First, is it any harder than bass or contrabass clarinet? I easily play both of those. But the huge reed on the bassoon make it look hard to play. I don't worry about fingerings on it, just being able to play it.

Well, there are a lot of differences when it comes to a double reed instrument, why not try it before you start to panic? Haha...If you think you can handle large instruments well you don't have to worry too much about the bassoon. I won't mention the need for change in embouchure and etc cos i dont play bassoon, i play oboe. But anyways, i played clarinet before and i know that there are much needed adjustments before you can really do good on a double reed instrument. From my guess it will be easy to produce a tone on the bassoon, but the rest will be a challenge, much like any other instrument, if you wanna be good.

ZacMan,
First, Contrabass Clarinet is awsome. Dont expect anything to ever be as cool as contra. Bassoon, by the nature of double reeds, involves alot of changes to embouchure, it is both top and bottom of the reed that vibrates, and it most be supported from all sides. If you play a low C bass or contra, then you will be used to using all your fingers and thumbs, but be warned Bassoon has 11 (and up) keys for your thumbs, alternative fingerings exist in their dozens for alot of notes esp in the tenor register, and it is much harded. rather illogical instrument is Bassoon, even if it is one of the cooler sounding instruments in the world.
