I sound like a wounded duck
Author: Alisha

I'd really appreciate some help because I've had an ongoing battle with my tone quality. I sound really really airy and I have a lot of trouble making notes sound like notes and it's not my sax. I can't get a flowing sound out of it. It's always on and off. I sound like I have a leak and I don't (my horn's been checked over three times). I figure it's my ombisure or something, but I'd appreciate help as soon as possible because I have an audition for a combo in a week. Thanks in advance.

your right its not your instrument its either gonna be your ombisure and your breathing controll. your lungs need to be built up. a smooth steady exhalation is what your gunning for concentrate on that and you should be just fine

The trouble could also be the reed, which may be too hard or need to be wet a great deal more, or it may just be a bad reed.

It could be many different things you are doing incorrectly.First of all from experience,it sounds perhaps that you are applying too much pressure on the mouthpiece and reed. You want just enough pressure applied to the mouthpiece so that the reed will produce vibration.Try to relax when playing.Try not to be stiff when playing. As I was saying this is just one of many things that could be causing the "duck" sound. But dont worry, we have all experienced it.Its all part of learning.Hope this helps.

tHISOUNDS CRAZY BUT USE YOUR WET REED AND JUST BEND YOUR REED WITH YOUR MOUTHPIECE A LITTLE BIT AND PUSH YOUR BOTTOM LIP UP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE REED.

ashley sorry but all that does it tune it ok it prolly is ur reed not being soft enough and wet enough this might sound crazy but soak ur reeds in listerine when ur not using them it accually makes them last longer and they are cleaner but also keeps them wet and the quality of the sound is so much better specially for jazz.
