Bresth in untill your lungs hurt, and breath out until your lungs hurt. do this five times in a row. It stretches your lungs out. Beath in a sixth time all the way and play a note and hold it. Plus, if you don't have your fingers on all the way on the holes, you could lose air.

Practise blowing long notes everyday and you will soon improve.

holding your breath until your lungs sounds like it hurts. and that can potentially damage your lungs. you know your limits of your lungs, if it doesn't feel right stop. practise your long tones slowly, 12 beats at tempo=60. don't blow until there is nothing left, you wont gain anything except hurting lungs. as you notice that you can easily make this length, add another 4 beats. hope this helps.
