I am becoming so discouraged about my oboe playing. I started on clarinet in the 7th grade. When I moved into highschool I started playing the oboe for concert band. Then the bassoon the next year, then the french horn, then the flute, and then back to oboe again once I reached my 11th grade year. I was never able to get private lessons cause I lived in a small town. I became worried, when college application time came around, that I would never be up to par, so I quit. But this year I picked it up again realizing that it truely is my passion. But now I am afraid that it is too late for me. I have all this musical knowledge in my head and I feel like I am unable to catch up with myself. If anyone has advice please reply. thanx

i can't beleive that was said on this board! no one sucks at an instrument. going from one instrument to another to another, isn't the best way to be proficient at any of them. you want to play oboe, you need to stay on that. tkae it home and practise every day. you don't need to practise 10 hours a day, 2 hours a day is enough to get you ont he right track. spend time practising youmusic until it is perfect. you can also get method books to help with the technical things. i know from spending a while on one instrument and going back to another, you need time to get adjusted, give yourself time, it doens't come back all at once. practise hard and be focused on where you want to go. if you know of anyone who plays oboe that could help, seek it, they could have tips and poiinters and could help you improve. hope this helps.

Hey, someone should kick Ashley or whoever she is out of here for saying that!! one or two hours every day for a month should help you get to your goal. My dad is 34 years old and played piano when he was a little boy. He felt the same way. He started up again two years ago. He worked hard non his own and then he got a private instructor. He's doing great and is learning to improvise and is a moderate pianist, so don't give up!!

I can't believe that another musician would ever say that to a fellow musician who is discouraged by there limits. Sweetheart if I was awful enough to quit I would have already. Incourage never discourage. Thanx Vic
