I play sax, and I don't believe I've suffered any ill effects. If you're going to loose any hearing while you play, it's because of the trombone player blasting into your ear from behind (all semester long!), not your own horn, which points away from you. Plenty of good looking sax players out there!

That's rediculous, actually. Not to be mean, but the only instrument that I can actually say can give you a funny look is trumpet. The cup where the lips go can over time distort them, but the sax, in fact, because as your embouchure strengthens due to stronger facial muscles, can do nothing but improve your chinline if any effect at all. The only time it's not advised to take up a wind instrument such as clarinet or sax is if you are very young. But heck, I played clarinet with full braces, I had a much easier time than those with braces who played brass, again because of the mouthpiece pressing against painful wires. Ouch. Please, play your sax. If you have doubts and want to show your mom someone as an example, I'm a married woman, but I've always thought Candy Dulfer is so pretty. Look her up and show your mom. Also, just so you know, I played clarinet and sax and by the time I went to college, I was accepted into a top sorority, you can imagine how vain that was!!! So, please don't worry-- your sax playing just might woo a few guys ;-)

The amount of superstition surrounding an instrument is amazing at times.

There is one side effect - your bottom teeth (may, note the word MAY) get blunt after prolonged playing, and your right thumb will develop a rough texture due to supporting the instrument.

Apart from that, nothing much, really.

I totally approve with what ZTWC said:
"your bottom teeth (may, note the word MAY) get blunt after prolonged playing"
It may happen if you start sax at an early age (around 14-15)

"..and your right thumb will develop a rough texture due to supporting the instrument."
it is true too, and i have it on my right thumb :)

peace
