There are as many answers to this question as there are players of reed instruments - Correction, there are probably more answers than people, since this is not an exact science and some reeds just won't follow the rules no matter what you do.

There are differences of opinion at every stage of this procedure. One approach is: Take the new reed, wet it, play on it only for a short time, say 10 to 20 minutes. Gradually increase the playing time during future playing sessions.

No matter what method you use, it is a good idea to have several reeds "broken in", that is "ready to play" at all times.

I've found the best way is to warm it up then play it fo a while. See what the tone's like, play a bit more and away you go.

I find with new reeds...and even with the broken in ones, it makes a bit of a difference if you lick the whole read and kind of glue it to the mouthpiece before you secure it. It makes a nice seal and it does not wiggle.

the best way to break in a whole reed is if it's big enough, put it in your mouth and let it soak a while, 5 to ten min. Then do your regular practice time. If you don't break the reed, it will sound perfect.
