I've heard something before that if you sand the back of your alto sax reeds, the sound will improve. I'm not sure if this is true. Someone, enlighten me..please?

Hm, well I do know that natual reeds get a bit 'fluffy' after a while because the fibres start fraying a little, so if these ae scraped off, very very gently with a blade the sound will become clearer.

all sanding your reeds do is make them thiner and SOMETIMES it makes the sound better so like your useing a 2 halve you could buy a 2 or 1 halve to make it easier

I wouldn't sand the reeds if I were you. I'm not sure if your a beginner or not, but either way, even pros have difficulty making sure what they do to their reeds stays consistent and reliable.
Sanding the reeds is risky, and if you don't know what your doing, you'll end up ruining good reeds for no reason. Your better off trying different brands or styles within brands.
I found that on a student mouthpiece, reeds themselves make a bigger difference than what you do with them. If your on something like a plain rico, try moving up to a rico royal, or if your adventurous, try out a classic vandoren (remember to convert the strength - ie. rico normal #3 becomes about a #2 vandoren classic). You'll find your sound is much rounder and smoother.
BUT DONT waste all your money buying boxes of new reeds...ask if your shop lets you buy single reeds or if you can try them there, instead of buying a $40 box of reeds your never gonna use.
Hope this helps.
