Hello everyone! I'll be in 11th grade in the fall and I just took up the flute to play in the summer band in our community. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips for me that I can apply. I mostly am just having trouble with the breath support... I never knew that flutists were so full of hot air... jk ;) Any advice would be gratefully heeded! Thanks!

Ok...a couple to watch out. Do NOT tilt the flute in towards you!! I know it's very very tempting, especially for higher notes, but it also means that your tone quality will change (not in a good way) and the note will go flat. This is hard, but all you can do is practise lots. Once you practise more and more, your embouchure becomes more refined. If you can't get higher notes, try turning the flute outwards and moving your bottom teeth back a little. That helps. The most important part is to keep your embouchure relaxed and aperture small. generally, you should get the hang of it really quickly :P

Exactly what D.C. said, practice is the key, the more you practice the more air support you will build up, its not something you can just start doing, it comes with time and patience! :) you'll get there!

I don't know if this will help you, but you need to do a few things to be a flutist. Here's a list.

1. Before the song starts, take a big breath and fill your diafram (can't spell) with air.
2. If you get lost in a song, skip a head a few measures and wait until the others start that measure.
3. Practice for at least a hlaf an hour every day if you can.
4, and most important. Just have fun.
P.S. I'm going into my second year of playing the flute.
