 soprano vs alto
Author: jimmy quintero

I've been told that soprano sax is not a good reed instrument to begin learning on. Alto is much easier and forgiving and more in tune, and is easier to blow into.

I prefer to study only the soprano sax, but not if the above is true.

Any advice ?

Yes, the Soprano can be more difficult to play in tune, but that shouldn't stop you from playing it. The most compelling reason to choose alto over soprano is that you'll find many more opportunities to play alto in concert ensembles. If you plan on playing exclusively solo or with an adult contemporary group, soprano would be fine. If you want to play with a community band, wind orchestra, jazz, or swing band, you'd be pretty much counted out with only a soprano. You would get much more use out of an alto.

Play both. Sopranos are good for soloing, and the intonation is only as bad as the person playing. ;)

Alto is the better instrument to start out on though, it is indeed more forgiving in the beginning stages, and easier to play for most people. If your hands or mouth are small, then you might start on soprano anyway.

ALTO ALTO ALTO!!!!!! Go with the alto sax..... Its much easier... and if you want to do an all state/honors band... you will have to go on alto, because chances are... there are no saprano parts to the songs.. but If you want solo's like in Molly on the shore... Go with saprano.. But I would choose ALTO!! Me being a Tenor sax and formor Alto sax player.

The soprano can be tricky to play in tune. Generally, the smaller the saxophone, the more it responds to changes in lip pressure on the reed. But don't let that stop you if soprano it the one you really like. I play both alto and soprano. I started on alto and when I got my soprano, I practiced my intonation using a tuner. You will have to develop a near perfect embouchure but there's nothing wrong with that. If you decide to add alto or tenor later, intonation will be a snap.
