I have a student plastic mouthpiece.Would my sax sound better if I bought a plastic Selmer mouthpiece for about $90.00? What is the difference in the student mouthpiece and a Selmer plastic mouthpiece?

Joseph,
many think that the mouthpiece is the most important part of a saxophone! So I would say that investing in a good mpiece is definetely the right move. (Quick anecdote: Charlie Parker always played different altos (for various reasons!), however he never let go of his mouthpiece: he always kept it in his pocket, as that was all he needed!) The difference between a student and a pro/more expensive piece is not only in the materials used, but also in the manufacture and finish. In fact as most pro pieces are finished by hand, it would be good to try a few of the same make/model as you may find differences between them (just like instruments). I'm sure as you try a few pieces you'll quickly notice the difference. BTW somewhere on the web there is a guide on testing mouthpieces, could be of interest. Cheers, Manlio

The Selmer plastic mouthpiece doesn't demand an "A" when you're done.

well to me i beleive in as much there is a good difference between student and proffessional horn so therefor there most be a diiferent between the mouthpieces talking about the tone production the flexibility and other eesential things on the sax . so my advice for you is just go and buy a mouthpiece that will really give you the kind of tone you want that also will suite the kind of music you want to be playing .
