 Ducky Oboes

I just saw a website about oboes sounding ducky and stupid. It makes me angry because I know that if you play the oboe well and correctly that it is very beautiful.

But you must admit, most beginners sound like ducks on death's door! I should know - I'm one of them! There are more ducky oboes than nice oboes, but that site was a bit unfair, yes, because players such as Christian Hommel can completely transform the sound of the oboe. And then of couse beyond grade 6 in general the duckiness has gone, in most cases.

yeah, same with bassoons. i've heard that "oboe is the high pitched duck, bassoon is the low pitched duck" or something along those lines. i play bassoon, and i really find that offensive! lol
