I been playing the Bb clarinet for some time now, and I was wondering how do I practice and learn the skill of being able to hear my note and tell whether it is falt or sharp. Similarly, how can i learn to tell which note someone is playing just by hearing it. How should/can I practice this technique? Thanks.

ear training is the least favourite technique that people like to learn. spend time around a piano and/or a tuner. also spend a lot of time around your instrument. the more familiar you are to your instrument, the easier you can know what note another clarinet is playing. tune your instrument every time you play after you've warmed up and that you know what your insturment sounds like when it's in tune. eventually you'll notice when you are sharp or flat. also sound clashes; when two notes are plyed out of tune, you get a beat frequency(physics at its finest). you'll hear a ripple in the sound when a note is played around 10 cents apart and further. the faster the ripple is, the further apart you are. its much harder to tell when you are flat or sharp, and harder to explain here. pick whichever instrument to tune to and try and match it. a proper intrument to tune to is a piano thats used in your band or a note on a mallet instrument(xylo, marimba, bells). rememeber that you are a transposing instrument. hope this helps.

But make sure that whatever you are tuning to, if you choose to tune to a piano, mallet instrument or whatever is in tune. Especially be careful when tuning to a wooden mallet instrument, they tend to be somewhat tempermental, especially when used outside in the rain etc.
