 Beginning Sax

Hi

I have just started to learn the alto sax. I can play flute (grade 8) and piano (grade 8) - so I can read music etc.

I am doing OK on the sax but one thing I am finding is that after about 15-20 minutes of playing my mouth muscles just "give up" on me and I find it increasingly hard to get the correct embouchure. Is this just because my mouth muscles are "in training" for the new instrument? Is it normal for beginners or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for any advice.
Lottie

You'll just doing fine! Keep on the good work :-) it's normal when you've just started, it'll get better when your muscles get used to it!

yes, that is perfectly normal. as you begin, don't practise for hours on end, you'll notice your lips sag and burn. practice for 30 minutes a day, that should be plenty, to get your mouth in shape. after a few weeks, you can up the time you practice, and get your lips into shape. don't work so hard that your lips hurt all the time. give it suitable time. hope this helps.

I agree with Theboy_2, I also want to add that you have to practice regularly without prolongued drop outs, once i didn't play for a month and sure enough when i got up on stage, after 15 minutes of playing, I couldn't get the breath inside the instrument, IT WAS HORRIBLE!!! Sorry for the short story, anywayz, you have to practice more than 30 I think, 45 is good. And remember: don't stop.

P.S. One more thing, maybe it not you, maybe there is an evil alien conspiracy against you playing the sax.
