How long have you been playing the clarinet? What age are you?
It is a good ideas to get reasonably proficient at the clarinet before you switch to alto sax. The alto sax is a heavy instrument and not recommended for small people. The habits you develop in learning the clarinet will help you even though you switch to alto sax. If you try to do it the other way around, you will find it far more difficult. It is harder to move back to clarinet later if you change your mind.
But at the end of the day, the choice should be yours. The most important argument is that you want to do it. Wanting to play an instrument is the most important factor in becoming good at it. If you don't like an instrument, you will never become good.
Would it be possible to rent a sax over the summer and play around with it so that when school starts again in the Autumn, you will be in better position to make this decision?

Also, most bands have plenty of clarinets and may need some saxophones. Also to play in jazz band, you have to play sax.
