Well, that's awesome. I plan to either audition for the Army Band or for "The President's Own" Marine Band .. my first choice is the latter because it was seeing them my seventh grade year (my first year playing) oboe that made me want to be a music major and eventually join them. I have NO firsthand experience, but I say GO FOR IT!!! And best of luck!

I played clarinet 3 years in the U.S. Army Field Band in Washington, DC (comparable to the U.S. Army Band) and have the following advice: practice hard before you audition! The military bands employ some very fine players. Many are from music schools or have played semi-professionally. I had a great experience in the Field Band, both musically and socially, and traveled a lot. I learned a lot from the more experienced players.
Some bands request that you send them an audio tape of your playing before thay invite you for an in-person audition. They all require that you enlist in the service for 3-4 years. Check the bands' websites for openings and full audition instructions. Some of the best bands are:
United States Army Field Band, Washington, DC
United States Army Band, Washington, DC
United States Military Academy Band, West Point, NY
United States Marine Band, Washington, DC (probably the best)
United States Navy Band, Washington, DC
United States Air Force Band, Washington, DC
United States Coast Guard Band, New London, CT
Also, there are many other military bands at most of the Army/Navy/Marine/Air Force posts located throughout the United States. For information on all Army bands only, go to the website at http://bands.army.mil/default.asp .
Best of luck!
